We never wanted to be great wedding photographers, we wanted to be great photographers. 

Wedding photography is, as a genre, always in danger of falling into cliche. There’s always a new trend, always a new craze that wedding photographers are looking to emulate, but for us we never wanted to be like anybody else, we wanted to find our viewpoint, our style. A style not based on tricks or constructs, a style based purely on the principles of great photography: story, composition, moment. A style that meant we would always be creating, never recreating.

To do that we stopped thinking about what we assumed was expected of a wedding photographer and started to focus on the same things that we found interesting in street photography – people being people, humour, personality quirks, colour, symmetry, unexpected stories and small moments as well as big ones. We started using the same cameras at weddings that we used on the street and stopped thinking of them as two separate entities. There was no longer wedding photography and street photography, just photography. That didn’t mean that we abandoned the expected beats of a wedding day: the confetti, the exchange of rings, the first dance – all of those moments are of course still there, it’s just that there would also be so much more.

That style, that mindset that we pioneered has now become known as street wedding photography, street documentary or even Docustreet wedding photography and has gained an international following that has taken us from its roots in London to speaking engagements all over the world. To us though whatever you want to call it it will always just be the way that we see the world and the way that we see your wedding. Nothing posed, nothing staged, real moments, real stories, real photography.
